Keeping First Things First

2 Chronicles 26

We take a look at King Uzziah in our passage today; he ascended to the throne at the age of 16. He reigned for 52 years and accomplished many great things. Verse 4 tells us that he did what was right in the sight of the Lord. Verses 8-15 even tell us of his many accomplishments.
Unfortunately, in verse 16, things took a bad turn for King Uzziah; for a time, he pursued the things of God, but after a while, the fame and popularity got to him. I mean, people were just bringing him gifts upon gifts, so he chose to pursue the name of King Uzziah rather than the name of the one true king, God.
King Uzziah got prideful and it showed:
“But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the Lord his God, and went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense upon the altar of incense" (2 Chronicles 25:16).
Against his own knowing, against 80 priests telling him no, that it was only for the priests, Uzziah tried to enter the temple of God.
Uzziah got mad at them and persisted, but God struck him with leprosy, which he had for the rest of his life, and he lived separately in a different house because of it.
What happened to Uzziah? The same thing that can happen to us. When fame and prosperity come our way, we must remember that they are not our goal. Our daily pursuit of God is.

Phil Vischer once said, “The impact God has planned for us does not occur when we’re pursuing impact. It occurs when we’re pursuing God.”

2 Chronicles 26:5. “And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper.”

Uzziah took his eyes off God and chose to focus on himself; essentially, as Scripture states, he no longer sought the Lord. The same unfortunate thing can happen to us if we choose to focus on the impact of our lives rather than on our pursuit of God. Doesn't mean we will get leprosy, but we won't prosper just as Uzziah didn't when he no longer kept God first.
